A total of 12 Walang Gutom Kitchens that provide free nutritious meals to people experiencing involuntary hunger are expected to be operating across the country by 2027, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Thursday, July 16.
Currently, three kitchens are operating in Pasay City, Cebu City, and Zamboanga City.
Three more kitchens are set to open in the second half of 2026 in Metro Manila, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga Region.
Meanwhile, six kitchens will be established by next year.
Walang Gutom Kitchen officer-in-charge and Social Welfare Officer IV Ramil Mapoy said the additional kitchens will be established in areas with a high incidence of involuntary hunger.
The kitchens are open to anyone experiencing involuntary hunger, particularly families and individuals in street situations.
“We are open to all, especially sa ating mga kababayan na naninirahan, namamalagi sa lansangan, at open din po tayo sa general public (We are open to everyone, especially our fellow Filipinos who are living or staying on the streets, as well as the general public),” Mapoy said in a forum.
Unlike traditional soup kitchens, the Walang Gutom Kitchens serve meals based on the Pinggang Pinoy food guide recommended by the National Nutrition Council and validated by the Department of Science and Technology's Food and Nutrition Research Institute.
“Dito po sa kitchen, hindi kami nagbibigay ng simpleng palugaw o pasopas. Dito po sa WGK, sinusunod po natin ang Pinggang Pinoy, so mayroon po tayong go, grow, and glow food. We ensure na mayroong kanin. In a daily serving, we offer two viands. We ensure po na in a plate, mayroon tayong gulay at meat (We do not simply serve porridge or noodle soup. Our kitchens follow the Pinggang Pinoy food guide, ensuring every meal contains go, grow, and glow foods. Each serving includes rice, two viands, vegetables, and meat),” Mapoy said.
He added that the kitchen in Pasay City mainly serves chicken and fish to cater to the preferences of most beneficiaries.
Since opening in December 2024, the Pasay City kitchen has served 306,428 meals.
The Cebu City kitchen, which opened in June, has served 6,666 meals, while the Zamboanga City kitchen has provided more than 3,000 free meals.
Mapoy encouraged individuals and groups to volunteer in the kitchens and called on hotels, restaurants, and other organizations to donate surplus food that can be turned into nutritious meals for beneficiaries.
