OpenAI’s first hardware will be an AI powered speaker.
The device is still in development, but it is designed to have no screens, and is meant to be an AI home companion.
According to reports, the device will learn more about its user to provide personalized experiences. It is also meant to have access to the user’s digital life, such as emails.
Basically, the AI we see in science fiction movies, where a user can converse with the AI, to get updates and assign tasks, such as putting on the news on TV. Though we may not see the latter yet.
The report also cited the device will have mechanical moving parts. While that part is vague, we can also speculate it could resemble a robot vacuum or one of the classic Sphero devices that can move around the house and follow you along. Seems to make sense if the user would want to keep querying it anytime they want to. Also fits the description as a “companion.”
This could be the first volley of hardware products OpenAI launches to contend with other tech rivals. It is rumored the AI-powered earphones and an AI phone–one that has no apps, and would rely entirely on AI, are also on their way.
This announcement comes at an interesting time when Apple has recently sued OpenAI for theft of trade secrets.
