The rematch of the blockbuster duel between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have hit a roadblock after it was moved to January next year, but MP Promotions CEO Jas Mathur remained confident that the bout will become another record-breaking hit.
“What the people want to see is what the people want to see. Everybody wants to see Floyd and Manny one more time. That's what's going to break all records,” said Mathur.
“That's what's going to be the most viewed event again in today's era, in the streaming era,” he added.
When the rematch was announced earlier this year, not a few boxing pundits and enthusiasts expressed doubts if the fight would gain the same interest and traction as their 2015 first fight had.
For one, the first duel was widely regarded as underwhelming for the level of the action — or the lack of it — with Mayweather winning the bout behind the defensive masterclass.
Second, both fighters are already way past their prime, with Mayweather already hitting 50 by the time of the rescheduled January fight and Pacquiao at 48 years old.
But Mathur sees it otherwise.
“I think people are always going to be interested in watching that fight,” said Mathur, believing that the bout can even set new records.
“These guys are, they're an anomaly, right? Each one of them, whether Floyd or Manny. So I think it doesn't matter, the age doesn't really matter in that spectrum between these two. Everybody's going to watch the fight,” he added.
“The people that say they're not going to watch the fight are going to be the first ones to watch the fight.”
