JDV Corners launched in Pangasinan schools to inspire youth

SAN JACINTO, Pangasinan – The JDV (Jose de Venecia Jr.) Corner, featuring the life and legacy of the Pangasinense former five-time Speaker of the House of Representatives, was launched in various schools to inspire public service and patriotism among the youth.
Department of Education (DepEd) Pangasinan II Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Vivian Luz Pagatpatan said during Tuesday’s launching that JDV Corners have been established in Manaoag, San Fabian, and San Jacinto national high schools, with another to be set up in Mangaldan National High School.
"This is for you. The life and works of Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. will teach us powerful lessons. From an ordinary child he became a global leader," she said.
She told the learners to look past challenges and aspire for greater things, such as becoming a leader of the country.
Pagatpatan said JDV's life and work as Speaker of the House of Representatives is a true reflection of peace, diplomacy, unity, and kindness.
Pangasinan fourth district Rep. Gina de Venecia, wife of JDV, said the corner will have books, comics, documentaries, pictures, and other materials that will inspire students to understand not only the late Speaker's life but also the teachings on service, love for country, and hope for the next generation.
"We will have a QR code for the young people. You will meet your Grandpa Joe, Uncle Joe, and Tatay Joe," she said.
Jesmin Alyssa Calpo, a Grade 9 student at San Jacinto National High School, said she and her classmates are excited to get to know JDV, as they admitted to having only heard of his name but not his life and role as a leader.
She also commended the use of a QR code to access materials, since her generation uses devices for reading and accessing information.
De Venecia was born in Dagupan City on Dec. 26, 1936. He served seven terms in the House of Representatives, five of them as Speaker, making him the longest-serving House leader in the post-war Congress. Fondly called "JDV" or "Speaker Joe," he was the architect of the Rainbow Coalition, an alliance that united diverse political parties.
He was also the principal author of landmark laws, including the Dollar Remittance Program, Bases Conversion and Development Act, Build-Operate-Transfer Law, Philippine Economic Zone Act, and New Central Bank Act.
De Venecia was known as a hero when Dagupan City was at its weakest following the devastating 1990 Luzon earthquake recorded at magnitude-7.8.
After his passing on Feb. 10 this year at the age of 89, the city government declared Dec. 26 every year as De Venecia Day to honor him. (PNA)
