Homeward hero

OF TREES AND FOREST
It is quite appropriate that the film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey—the epic story of Odysseus’s long, hard journey home to Ithaca to reclaim his place as husband, father, and king—arrives in Philippine cinemas just as Filipinos welcome home Alexandra Eala, our own modern-day hero, who is returning from an impressive run of victories on the WTA Tour.
Eala won the Birmingham Open, reached the semifinals in Berlin after upsetting top-10 players on the women’s tour, most notably world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, and then made us all proud at Wimbledon by becoming the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the fourth round. Her recent successes have shown both growing power and composure, and they have pushed her into the WTA top 30 while confirming that she belongs among the sport’s elite.
I am excited to see The Odyssey, but I am even more thrilled to see the entire Filipino nation embrace Eala and shower her with the praise she truly deserves. She is more than a tennis star; she has become a symbol of perseverance, grace, and possibility for a country that badly needs examples of courage under pressure.
Yes, she is a remarkable young tennis player with a bright future ahead. Like many Filipinos, I feel a surge of pride and even goosebumps whenever I hear tennis legends like Serena Williams praise her. It also means a great deal to hear commentators and read articles speak so highly of her character and demeanor—how easy she is to admire and root for. Alex has not only shown immense promise as an athlete, but has also represented her nation—just like other great Filipino athletes—with grace and dignity.
I remember being 11 or 12 years old, when Gabriel “Flash” Elorde was the name that made the nation swell with pride. Widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters ever to emerge from the Asia-Pacific region, he ruled as super featherweight champion under both the WBA and the WBC. True to his nickname, he was dazzlingly swift and elegant in the ring, and children everywhere would shadowbox in the streets, trying to move and punch just like Elorde.
There were many more Filipino athletes who reached the pinnacle of their sport and made the country proud. Lydia de Vega became Asia’s fastest woman and dominated the region’s sprint scene. In the 1990s and 2000s, Onyok Velasco won Olympic silver in boxing in 1996, and Efren “Bata” Reyes’s mastery of the pool table made him a global icon and now widely considered the greatest of all time.
Numerous Filipino athletes have overcome formidable challenges, including life adversity, to achieve glory not only for themselves but also for their nation. Manny Pacquiao, for instance, triumphed over not only his opponents in the ring but also the harsh realities of poverty, becoming a global boxing icon.
Filipino athletes help the country in ways that go far beyond the scoreboard. Every time they step onto the world stage, they carry not only their own ambition but also the hopes of millions who see in them a reflection of the nation’s resilience, discipline, and dignity. Their victories bring joy, of course, but even more valuable is the reminder that Filipinos can compete with the best in the world and do so with heart, humility, and grace. In a country often burdened by hardship and uncertainty, our Filipino athletes become living proof that excellence is possible, that big dreams can be pursued through hard work and persistence.
As Eala has demonstrated, athletes inspire not simply because they win medals or lift trophies, but because they reveal the kind of character forged in the process. Young people who watch them come to understand that success demands hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, and courage under pressure. They also learn that failure is not final, since many athletes come back stronger, wiser, and more determined. Long after the cheers have faded, their impact remains, because they leave behind more than victories—they leave behind a blueprint on how to live with purpose and pride.
