Tropical Depression Josie, internationally known as Haishen, weakened into a low-pressure area on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, and is expected to dissipate within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the weather disturbance weakened into an LPA at 2 p.m. due to strong vertical wind shear, which disrupted its circulation.
As of 3 p.m., the LPA was located 1,095 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon and was moving farther away from the country.
Although it no longer has a direct effect on the country, Estareja said the remnants of the weather system may still bring rain showers over Samar Island and Dinagat Islands.
Meanwhile, PAGASA is monitoring another tropical cyclone outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) near Guangdong, China.
As of 3 p.m., it was located 940 kilometers northwest of Extreme Northern Luzon and is expected to weaken into an LPA as it moves inland over mainland China.
With the weakening of Josie, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” has also begun to ease, leaving it as the only weather system affecting the country.
Estareja said the weakening habagat is expected to bring fewer rains over the western sections of Luzon in the next two days.
He added that no tropical cyclone is expected to enter the PAR through the weekend, although one tropical cyclone may still develop or enter the country's monitoring domain before the end of the month.
For Wednesday, July 15, PAGASA expects generally fair weather across most of Luzon, including Metro Manila, with sunny to partly cloudy skies in the morning.
Isolated afternoon or evening rain showers and thunderstorms remain possible, particularly over Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Zambales, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.
Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao are also expected to experience generally fair weather, with localized thunderstorms developing in the afternoon or evening.
Estareja said the habagat may gradually strengthen from Thursday to Saturday, July 16 to 18, bringing cloudier skies and more frequent rain showers over parts of Northern and Central Luzon, including Metro Manila, by the weekend.
However, widespread heavy monsoon rains are not expected.
