Joaquin Tovera parts ways with UP, joins La Salle

Reigning UAAP champion De La Salle got a big boost after rising star Joaquin Tovera decided to part ways with University of the Philippines to join the Taft-based squad for the upcoming Season 89 men’s basketball tournament.
De La Salle head coach Topex Robinson disclosed this on Monday, July 13, saying the 18-year-old Tovera’s decision was personal.
“At the end of the day, family was the biggest reason bedhind my decision,” said Tovera. “I’ve always been closest to the people who have supported me since Day 1, and knowing I’ll be in an environment where I can be near them gives me a lot of peace and confidence.”
“That support system means everything to me, and I believe it will help me become a better player and an even better person,” he added.
Tovera saw action for both the UP Maroons and the Gilas Pilipinas Boys during the 2026 Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup, with the national youth team also competing as a guest squad in the tournament.
He had a decent showing in his short stint with UP, and averaged 18.5 points and 7.0 assists with the Gilas Boys.
“I'm really excited to join De La Salle University and become part of such a proud basketball program,” Tovera said. “I'm looking forward to learning from the coaches, competing with my new teammates, and doing everything I can to help us succeed. I can't wait to get to work.”
He expressed his gratitude to UP.
“I'll always be grateful to UP for welcoming me into the program and believing in me,” Tovera said. “The coaches, my teammates, and everyone behind the team treated me with so much respect, and I'll always appreciate the opportunity they gave me. I have nothing but gratitude for my time there and wish UP nothing but success moving forward.”
Tovera is expected to join Jacob Cortez, who is in his final playing year, as well as Agjanti Miller, who is expected to debut in Season 90.
