Tondo blaze placed under control after reaching 5th alarm
A fire that swept through a residential area along Dagupan Extension in Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila on July 14 has been placed under control as of 7:29 p.m., after earlier escalating to the fifth alarm, according to authorities.
Around 50 houses were being razed, on top of those already reduced to ashes, at the height of the blaze, which rapidly spread across the densely populated community.
The fire reportedly started in the middle of a tightly packed residential area, making it difficult for responding firefighters to immediately access the seat of the fire.
Initial reports indicated the blaze broke out at around 4:01 p.m. and was raised to first alarm at about 4:15 p.m., before rapidly escalating through higher alarm levels and reaching the fifth alarm by 5:29 p.m., prompting authorities to deploy additional fire trucks and manpower to ensure sufficient water supply and contain the flames.
The Manila Fire District said the fire involved houses made of light materials, making them highly susceptible to rapid spread.
Firefighters from local government units and volunteer fire brigades worked hand in hand in suppression operations, with an Incident Command Post established at Barangay 152, Laguna Extension to coordinate the response. Nearby fire hydrants were also utilized to sustain the water supply.
Residents were seen evacuating their homes as thick smoke engulfed the area, while authorities continued to advise the public to avoid the vicinity and prioritize safety during firefighting and clearing operations.
As of this writing, no casualties have been reported, although authorities are still verifying possible injuries and the number of affected families.
