When opportunity meets determination

FROM THE MARGINS
Every June and July, graduation ceremonies across the Philippines become celebrations of hope. Thousands of students don their togas, receive their diplomas, and take their first steps toward careers they have long dreamed of. Yet beyond the applause and photographs lies a more profound story — that education is often the bridge that enables ordinary people to overcome extraordinary challenges. For many low-income Filipinos, education remains the best pathway out of poverty.
For six graduates of the CARD-MRI Development Institute (CMDI), this year's graduation season became even more meaningful. As announced last June 2 by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), they also achieved one of the country's most demanding professional milestones by passing the 2026 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Licensure Examination.
Vanery Joy Gablines, John Lloyd Saberon, Andrew Sanchez, Christine Iniego, Georgie Ann Villanueva, and Maria Eloisa Quilloy now join the accounting profession not only as new CPAs but as living proof that determination can overcome limitations of circumstance.
Their achievement carries special significance because CMDI is unlike most higher education institutions. It is a practitioner-led educational institution that aims to develop professionals committed to financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and community development. Many of its students come from families that have experienced poverty firsthand. It provides scholarships, work opportunities, and values-based education to allow deserving young Filipinos to pursue careers that might otherwise remain beyond reach.
The success of these six new CPAs, therefore, represents more than individual accomplishment. It demonstrates how access to quality education can transform lives — not only for students, but also for the families and communities they will eventually serve.
Their journeys were anything but easy.
Magna Cum Laude graduate and scholar Vanery Joy Gablines described her experience through what she called the "three Fs": a flood of tears, unwavering focus, and the fight for a better future. Despite graduating with honors, she admitted that panic struck during the opening moments of the board examination. Her mind went blank, yet she continued with the exam despite fear.
Persistence likewise defined the journeys of John Lloyd Saberon and Christine Iniego. Their first attempts at the CPA licensure exam were unsuccessful. Saberon worked and taught as a college instructor while preparing for another chance. Iniego was required to complete a refresher course. Coming from a family of farmers and laborers, her journey was especially challenging, marked by financial hardships. Still, both of them persevered, and eventually achieved their dream of becoming CPAs. Their stories remind us that failure is often a pause and not the end of the journey.
Andrew Sanchez confronted a different challenge. A severe ulcer left him bedridden just days before his pre-board exams. Refusing to surrender, he adapted — taking the pre-board exams online from his bed even while enduring intense pain. His story proves resilience is not the absence of hardship, but the will to move forward despite it.
Meanwhile, Georgie Ann Villanueva and Maria Eloisa Quilloy demonstrated that strong educational foundations often matter more than expensive review programs. Together, the two relied largely on self-review, confident that the discipline and academic preparation they received from their institution would carry them through. It did.
Although each story is unique, their testimonies reveal common lessons. These graduates and new CPAs learned that discipline outlasts motivation, that perseverance is stronger than disappointment, and that success is rarely achieved alone. Professors, mentors, administrators, classmates, and families all became part of their journey. Their educational institution itself provided scholarships, opportunities, and an environment that nurtured both competence and character.
Above all, their stories reflected deep faith. Several graduates spoke of trusting God's timing, carrying more faith than confidence into the examination room. Their victories became reminders that setbacks are not necessarily signs of failure but often part of preparation for something greater.
As these six new CPAs begin their professional careers, they also embody the values that accounting demands: integrity, responsibility, and public trust. Yet perhaps their greatest contribution extends beyond technical competence. Having experienced hardship themselves, they understand that numbers ultimately represent people, families, livelihoods, and dreams.
That perspective aligns closely with their school’s mission of producing professionals who combine excellence with social purpose. In an institution dedicated to advancing microfinance and entrepreneurship education, success is measured not only by passing licensure examinations but also by developing leaders who will use their expertise to create opportunities for others.
This graduation season, the stories of these newest CPAs remind us that education remains one of the most powerful investments that society can make. It transforms uncertainty into opportunity, adversity into resilience, and ambition into service.
Their message to every new graduate is simple but enduring: where you begin does not determine where you can go. With faith, discipline, perseverance, and the opportunity to learn, even the most difficult dreams can become reality.
