PNP commanders tasked to assist in holding active shooter drills in schools

The Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered all police commanders to coordinate with the Department of Education (DepEd) in providing the necessary assistance for the conduct of active shooter drills in all schools nationwide.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. also emphasized that the presence of policemen in the schools for any conduct of drills relating to the safety of the students must have the go signal of school authorities.
“The safety and welfare of our learners are always our top priority, and the information that would be provided through this program would be their first line of protection and defense in cases of emergency situations inside the campus,” said Nartatez.
Last week, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara earlier said that active shooter drills will focus on the things that should be done when there is a gun attack inside the school.
He said it would serve as an automatic protocol that will be followed by the school authorities to protect the learners and the rest of the people in the school in cases of gun attack.
Nartatez said police commanders were tasked to coordinate with local DepEd offices and school authorities from both private and public schools, the move is intended to ensure police presence in the conduct of the drill.
Police presence in such an activity, he said, will also strengthen the trust and confidence of the learners to the police and give them peace of mind while in their respective schools.
The PNP has been in constant coordination with DepEd in crafting security measures following the school incident that happened in a high school in Tacloban City, which is the first case of gun attack in the country.
The incident resulted in consultation meetings among DepEd, PNP and other stakeholders to come up with the protocol that would be observed in cases of gun attack.
Nartatez said the PNP will continue to provide all the necessary support systems to prevent the repeat of such an unfortunate incident in Tacloban City.
Aside from regular police visibility order that requires policemen to include schools in regular beat patrols, the PNP also backed programs that include guidance counselling and setting up anti-bullying desks involving its personnel from the Women and Children Protection Desk.
Nartatez said he also tasked police commanders to coordinate with school authorities for possible presence of policemen during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony, similar to what he initiated when he was still a young chief of police.
“The children are the future of this country and as such, it is our mandate, it is our obligation to protect them and to make them feel safe not only in their homes and on the streets, but also in their schools,” said Nartatez.
“We assure the public that we will continue to honor this commitment in coordination with DepEd and other stakeholders,” he added
