The backlash was intense.
Meta has recently announced a feature that would allow users to generate AI deepfakes of any public accounts on IG. Meta tried to spin this as a fun and intuitive feature to create things like invites. Users won’t be notified if their images have been used, and no permissions will need be given when using this. It would’ve been just there.
But the people were having none of it.
And the backlash seemed strong enough to make Meta flinch, at least for now. The feature, called Muse Image, has been removed from IG. But this doesn’t stop Meta’s AI ambitions, and we’ll likely see something again soon.
But Meta has always had to shove changes down to users whether they liked it or not. So, what’s different this time?
Apparently, not only did the public make their concerns loud and clear, but also the Hollywood agency, CAA, whose clients are powerhouse names like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep (or Zendaya if you think the former mentioned are too old for you.)
Is there any correlation between the CAA and Meta's decision to disable Muse? Who is to say? At least the feature is out, for now.
