Seven vintage explosives, believed to be remnants of World War II, were discovered at a junk shop on F. Castillo Street in Barangay Bagumbuhay, Project 4, Quezon City, at around 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 12.
Police said the owner alerted authorities after noticing his workers' suspicious behavior while they were unloading scrap materials delivered from the junk shop's branch in Sitio Cabading, Barangay Inarawan, Antipolo City.
Responding personnel from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Project 4 Police Station coordinated with the District Explosives and Canine Unit (DECU), which secured the area and ensured the safety of nearby residents and workers.
The DECU team inspected the items and identified them as seven heavily corroded 60mm high-explosive (HE) M49A2 mortar rounds. They safely retrieved and secured the explosives for proper disposal.
The operation was completed at around 10:15 a.m., with no injuries or untoward incidents reported.
QCPD officials commended the junk shop owner for promptly reporting the discovery, saying the quick action helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
Police reminded the public not to touch suspected explosives and to immediately report similar discoveries to the nearest police station or through the QCPD hotline.
