A 47-year-old man was arrested after he was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) allegedly stealing a cellphone from a sari-sari store in Tondo, Manila, police said.

The Manila Police District (MPD)-Raxabago Police Station identified the suspect as Victor Varas, 47, a resident of Barangay 107, Tondo.

The complainant was identified as Ednalyn Dungganon, 36, a vendor who owns the sari-sari store on Magsaysay Street in Barangay 107.

Police said Dungganon discovered at around 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, that her cellphone worth P23,000 was missing.

She immediately reported the incident to Barangay 107 officials and reviewed CCTV footage, which allegedly showed Varas reaching through the fence of the store and taking the cellphone.

Barangay tanods later went to the suspect’s residence and invited him to the barangay hall for questioning.

According to police, Varas voluntarily appeared before barangay officials and surrendered the stolen cellphone, leading to his arrest. Personnel from the Don Bosco Police Community Precinct later took him into custody.

The recovered cellphone was turned over to authorities as evidence.

The suspect was informed of his constitutional rights, underwent a mandatory medical examination, and was brought to the Raxabago Police Station for documentation and booking.

Police are preparing a complaint for theft under Article 308 of the Revised Penal Code against Varas, which will be filed before the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings.
