A 52-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly threatened and verbally abused his wife during a mediation at a barangay hall in Malate, Manila, on Sunday, July 12.
The Manila Police District (MPD)-Malate Police Station withheld the identities of both the suspect and the complainant in accordance with Republic Act No. 9262, which protects the privacy of victims of violence against women and their children (VAWC).
Police said the incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. inside the Barangay 707 Hall along Leveriza Street while the couple was discussing an earlier complaint of alleged physical abuse.
According to the victim, her husband suddenly became enraged during the proceedings, aggressively pointed his finger at her, hurled verbal insults and curses in the presence of barangay officials, and allegedly threatened to wait for her outside the barangay hall and harm her.
The victim told authorities that the suspect’s actions caused her to fear for her safety.
Responding officers arrested the suspect and brought him to the Malate Police Station for documentation and proper disposition.
Police are preparing charges for violation of Republic Act No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004, particularly for alleged physical and psychological abuse, before the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings.
