The death toll from the combined effects of Typhoon “Inday” and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) rose to 18 on Sunday, July 12, as more than 562,000 people across the country have been affected while hundreds of travelers remained stranded in ports due to rough seas.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said that as of 6 a.m,, one more fatality was recorded in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur where a deadly rain-induced landslide struck Barangay Ngingir last July 10, bringing the toll there to six.
Meanwhile, 10 more people died in a separate landslide in Malapatan, Sarangani while two persons drowned in Bukidnon.
Seven people were also reported injured in Torrijos, Marinduque; Malapatan, Sarangani; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Calanogas, Lanao del Sur; and Baguio City.
Another 12 people remain missing: seven were reported in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental while five were reported in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said validation of all reported deaths, injuries, and missing persons is still ongoing.
The weather disturbance has affected 123,000 families or about 562,000 individuals nationwide. Of those affected, 4,200 families or about 16,200 people were staying in 116 evacuation centers.
Government data also showed that 236 houses were damaged. Of the total, 222 sustained partial damage while 14 were totally destroyed.
Authorities have so far provided P28.57 million worth of assistance to affected families.
Sea travel disruption
Sea travel also remained disrupted in several parts of the country despite Typhoon Inday already leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as the enhanced southwest monsoon continued to bring rough sea conditions.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said that as of 4 a.m. Sunday, operations in 53 ports across the country were affected.
A total of 845 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers remained stranded. Another 169 rolling cargoes, five vessels, and four motorbancas were also stranded.
The Southern Tagalog region recorded the highest number of stranded passengers at 292, followed by the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with 220, Western Visayas with 156, Bicol with 100, Palawan with 53, and Central Visayas with 24.
The PCG also monitored 140 vessels and 115 motorbancas taking shelter in various ports because of rough seas.
Nineteen people, including nine children, were also rescued by Coast Guard personnel after they were stranded by rising floodwaters beneath Tumagbok Bridge in Miagao, Iloilo amid heavy rains brought by Typhoon Inday on Saturday, July 11.
The PCG said the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Miagao Response Team worked with the local government unit, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and other responding agencies to reach the trapped residents.
All 19 individuals were safely evacuated to the Miagao Regional Evacuation Center.
Typhoon Inday exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday but its circulation continued to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing heavy rains, flooding, landslides, and dangerous sea conditions over several parts of the country.
The OCD urged the public to continue monitoring weather advisories and follow evacuation and travel instructions amid the effects of southwest monsoon.
