Police commanders in the Negros Island were instructed to strengthen health protection measures for personnel while maintaining public safety and security operations amid the rumblings of Kanlaon Volcano.
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said he already directed all police regional and provincial offices in affected areas to strictly implement health and safety protocols for personnel exposed to volcanic haze.
He also instructed police commanders to conduct daily health monitoring of officers deployed in affected areas and immediately refer those showing respiratory symptoms or other health concerns for medical evaluation.
“The safety of our personnel is our priority. I have directed all police commanders in affected areas to ensure that officers assigned to outdoor duties are provided with appropriate protective equipment,’ Nartatez said.
Pharmacies in Cebu City have been scrambling to replenish N95 mask supplies after panic buying followed the moderate explosive eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on July 9.
The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas warned that volcanic haze and ashfall could affect air quality in parts of Cebu, prompting local authorities to advise residents to wear well-fitted N95 or KN95 masks, limit outdoor exposure, monitor official advisories, and avoid spreading misinformation.
“They should also minimize unnecessary exposure to volcanic haze, and strictly follow the health advisories while continuing to provide uninterrupted public service,” Nartatez said.
The PNP Chief reminded all personnel to protect themselves while remaining ready to respond to the needs of affected communities.
