BJMP: Spacious QC Jail ready to accept Marcoleta

The new Quezon City Jail in Barangay Payatas is spacious and with modern designs compared to other detention facilities, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) assured on Sunday, July 12.
And this new facility is ready to accommodate Sen. Rodante Marcoleta who is currently under police custody after his arrest for a case of plunder, according to BJMP spokesperson Supt. Jayrex Bustinera.
Marcoleta is currently confined at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital due to his mild pneumonia, fluctuating blood pressure and other medical conditions.
However, the Sandiganbayan Third Division has ordered an independent medical examination of Marcoleta by the director of the University of the Philippines Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) or any of his authorized representatives to determine whether there is still an urgent need for the senator to remain in the hospital after receiving visitors despite the doctor’s recommendation of isolation due to mild pneumonia.
Bustinera said that the QCJMD currently has 3,300 PDLs which can accommodate 4,000 prisoners.

In addition, Bustinera noted that the QCJMD is equipped with sufficient facilities and medical equipment to address the needs of considered “vulnerable PDLs like Marcoleta.
“Maluwag and disenyo noon (Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory). Iisa lang naman ang selda na yan. Ganoon na sa lahat. Ito ay nasa 50 square meters. May dalawang banyo na shared para sa 10 (PDLs). May dalawang bentilador, may limang double-deck (beds). Share share sila (Its design is spacious. The design of the cell is all the same. All of them are similar. Each cell is about 50 square meters. There are two bathrooms shared by 10. There are two electric fans and five double deck beds),’’ Bustinera said.
Further, Bustinera pointed out that the cell of considered “vulnerable PDLs” was given access only near the infirmary or clinic to immediately meet their medical needs.
“There are also assigned doctors and nurses at the facility.
In fact, we have our own diagnostic laboratory for those with communicable diseases like tuberculosis,” Bustinera explained.
The BJMP official reiterated that no person deprived of liberty or any influential or high-profile PDLs will receive preferential treatment in the midst of Marcoleta’s possible detention.
“Makikita natin ang design ng BJMP (jail), hindi yan VIP (very important person) treatment kundi para sa makataong pamamahala ng piitan ( We can see that the design of the BJMP facility is not for VIP treatment but for the humane management in the facility),’’ Bustinera continued.
