The Philippines is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the landmark July 12, 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea with both legislative action and international dialogue, underscoring the nation’s commitment to sovereignty, international law, and peaceful dispute resolution.
House Resolution No. 1013, introduced by Malabon City lone district Rep. Antolin Oreta III, honors the country’s legal and diplomatic triumph and reaffirms adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The measure, adopted by the House Special Committee on the West Philippine Sea on May 25, recognizes the ruling as one of the most consequential victories in Philippine history, affirming maritime entitlements and reinforcing the rules-based international order.
The resolution calls on government institutions, civil society, and the public to commemorate the milestone through activities that promote awareness of the award and respect for maritime heritage. It is now pending plenary action upon the resumption of session on July 27.
“As the nation commemorates this historic achievement, the Philippines renews its steadfast commitment to diplomacy, adherence to international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. The 2016 Arbitral Award remains a beacon of hope that justice can prevail through law, and that principled leadership can secure a better future for generations of Filipinos,” the resolution states.
Its rallying cry: "Our Seas. Our Rights. Our Future."
