LANDSLIDE in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur. (BFP-Lanao del Sur)
DAVAO CITY – Fifteen people were reportedly killed and several others are still missing in rain-induced landslides in Davao Occidental, Lanao del Sur, and Sarangani on Friday, July 10.
Among the heavily-affected were towns still reeling from the magnitude-7.8 earthquake a month ago. Landslides were triggered by heavy rains due to the southwest monsoon affecting many parts of Mindanao this week.
Eleven of the fatalities are from the municipality of Calanogas in Lanao del Sur, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection-Lanao del Sur.
A report from the Bangsamoro Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (Bangsamoro READi) showed that as of 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, five persons were killed and six others are still missing in Calanogas.
The PDRRMO in Lanao del Sur said that all 11 fatalities have been retrieved from the landslide site in Barangay Ngingir.
Fire Officer 1 Aksani Ashe of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Lanao del Sur said that the BFP search and rescue team, along with personnel from PDRRMO, retrieved 11 bodies on Friday but three are still missing, two of them children. Ashe said that four houses were buried in the landslide.
Bangsamoro READi said one person is missing in Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur.
In Malapatan, Sarangani, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said 10 people were buried in a landslide in Sitio Blesong Fundao, Barangay Poblacion. The landslide buried two houses occupied by the Maladian and Yaton families.
According to reports, the houses sit on the mountainside of the barangay.
“The local government unit of Malapatan continues to advise all Malapateños to remain vigilant, especially those living in landslide-prone and high-risk areas. Residents are encouraged to monitor official advisories and heed evacuation orders when necessary to prevent further loss of life,” the local government said in a Facebook post.
Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental Mayor Jason John Joyce said that seven people were reported missing in flash flood in Barangay Tanuman Friday. Joyce said search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate them.
The local government said clearing operations are ongoing to remove landslide debris that blocked the road in Barangays Kalbay, Malalan, Nuing, and Sugal.
The towns of Alabel, Glan, Maasim, and Maitum were also hit by flooding and landslides as residents are reeling from the impact of last month’s earthquake.
The number of families in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) affected due to massive flooding has climbed to 85, 900 families or about 429, 500 persons, according to Bangsamoro READi. It added that 4,695 families are still staying in evacuation centers. Most of the affected families are in low-lying towns of Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte.
Bangsamoro READi said the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and typhoon Inday dumped heavy rains in the region, spawning massive flooding in low-lying areas since July 8. Continuous rains and flooding prompted local government units to suspend classes on all levels.
