BUTUAN CITY – A rescued female Green Sea Turtle was released back to sea in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur on Thursday.
In a statement on Friday, the local government unit (LGU) of Carrascal said the marine turtle was found by a deputized fish warden (Bantay Dagat) while conducting a routine seaborne patrol along the town's coastline on Thursday.
“The marine turtle was in distress as its flippers were entangled in fishing gear,” the Carrascal LGU said.
The Municipal Agriculture Office was immediately alerted and, in turn, coordinated with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in the nearby town of Cantilan.
Authorities immediately attended to the rescued marine turtle and examined its health.
“The marine turtle was immediately released back into the sea, particularly at Carrascal Baywalk in Barangay Baybay, after its treatment, documentation, and tagging,” the Carrascal LGU said.
It reminded residents to immediately report any trapped or stranded marine animals to authorities for appropriate response and action.
“Our municipal waters are home to precious marine wildlife. Let us continue to practice responsible fishing and protect our oceans,” the LGU said. (PNA)
