'Inday' death toll hits 15 as Lanao del Sur landslide kills 5

Super typhoon Inday
The death toll from rain-induced landslides triggered by Super Typhoon Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) climbed to 15 on Friday, July 10, after five more people were killed in a landslide in Lanao del Sur, adding to the 10 fatalities in a separate landslide in Sarangani.
The Lanao del Sur Police Office said the landslide struck Barangay Ngingir in Calanogas at around 2:30 a.m., burying several houses after continuous heavy rains weakened the slope.
Police said five people were confirmed dead, two were injured, and six others remained missing while search, rescue, and retrieval operations continued.
Responders had to reach the affected area on foot after roads leading to the village became impassable. Rescue teams were conducting both manual and mechanical excavation in an effort to locate the missing residents.
Personnel from the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, local disaster offices, local government units, and volunteers were taking part in the operations.
Earlier, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said a deadly landslide in Sitio Fandaw, Barangay Poblacion, Malapatan, Sarangani occurred where 10 people were killed after a house occupied by two families was buried.
According to the OCD in Region 12, the landslide occurred at around 10:30 a.m. after prolonged heavy rains saturated the soil.
OCD Region 12 Director Rodrigo Sosmeña said all 10 victims had been recovered from the debris.
