The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) won an international award for its digital tax calendar, a milestone in the government’s push to modernize its revenue collection systems and improve taxpayer compliance.
The country’s primary tax-collection agency received the Philippines Digital Initiative of the Year – Finance Award at the GovMedia Conference & Awards 2026, held Thursday, July 9, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore.
The accolade recognizes the 2026 BIR Interactive Digital Tax Calendar, an in-house developed platform that replaced traditional printed schedules with an online portal tracking tax deadlines, filing requirements, and compliance guidelines.

The recognition comes as the country accelerate public sector digitization to curb tax evasion and broaden revenue bases. The GovMedia awards evaluate government initiatives across Asia based on innovation, impact, and governance, with entries judged by an independent panel of industry experts.
In his acceptance speech, Mendoza credited the agency’s front-line employees and IT staff for the rollout of the digital platform, noting that the initiative aims to simplify transactions for individual and corporate taxpayers alike. The interactive calendar was first introduced during the 2026 National Tax Campaign Kickoff as part of a broader mandate to streamline compliance rules.
While the BIR did not disclose the exact development costs or specific savings realized from cutting back on printed materials, digital transformation initiatives under the Marcos administration have been aimed at maximizing collection efficiency for the country's multi-trillion peso budget. For fiscal year 2026, the bureau remains under pressure to meet robust revenue targets to support infrastructure spending and fiscal consolidation.
During the Singapore conference, Mendoza served as the sole panelist representing the Philippines in a discussion titled “When Government Gets Digital Right: Building Citizen-Centric Services that Deliver Results.” He outlined the agency’s strategy of balancing large-scale, multi-year IT overhauls with smaller, highly practical digital tools that provide immediate relief to taxpayers navigating the country's complex tax code.
The tax bureau plans to roll out further automation tools in line with the digital transformation agenda championed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The administration has repeatedly signaled that a modern, digitized bureaucracy is critical to sustaining economic momentum and improving ease of doing business rankings in the region.
