DAVAO CITY – The massive flooding due to continuous rains has affected at least 44,000 families or about 220,000 individuals in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as of Friday, July 10, the Bangsamoro Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (Bangsamoro READi) said.
Heavy rains due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or ‘’habagat’’ swamped many low-lying areas in the provinces of Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur since July 8, the Bangsamoro READi reported.
It added that flood has affected 158 barangays from 13 towns of Maguindanao del Sur, six in Maguindanao del Norte, and one in Tawi-Tawi.
Bangsamoro READi recorded that at least 9,200 families were affected by flooding in the region as of Thursday. Twenty-four hours later, the number rose to 44,000 families following validation. At least 2,900 of them sought refuge in 19 evacuation centers.
The marshy town of Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao del Sur had the highest number of affected families that rose from 4,825 families on Thursday to 5,655 Friday.
Bangsamoro READi said that validations are ongoing in all affected municipalities.
In Maguindanao del Norte, the town of Datu Odin Sinsuat had the highest number of affected families with 4,105. Most of the flooding was due to the swelling of rivers and tributaries. Bangsamoro READi said that all major road networks in the region are still passable amid reports of massive flooding and minor landslides.
Classes on all levels remain suspended in Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur. Classes on all levels were also cancelled in the towns of Kapatagan, Malabang, Pagayawan, and Sultan Dumalondong in Lanao del Sur and the municipalities of Kapalawan, Ligawasan, Nabalawag, Old Kaabakan, Pahamudin, and Tugunan in the BARMM-Special Geographic Area (SGA).
Several Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMO) in affected provinces reported rescue operations in flooded barangays. The Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Bureau of Fire Protection assisted in rescue and relief operations.
