PNP to build memorial marker for Jee Ick Joo inside Camp Crame

Remember Jee Ick Joo?
Yes, he was the South Korean executive who was killed right inside the Philippine National Police headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City after he was kidnapped by erring cops under the guise of an anti-illegal drugs operation.
His death became a symbol of the abuses committed during the drug war and PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said a memorial marker will be built right where he was strangled to death inside Camp Crame as a lasting reminder of the organization's commitment to institutional integrity.
“The memorial reflects the organization's willingness to confront its past while strengthening reforms that promote accountability and professionalism,” said Nartatez.
“This memorial is a solemn acknowledgment of a tragic chapter in our institution's history. We cannot change the past, but we can honor the victim, uphold accountability, and reaffirm our commitment that such abuses of authority will never be tolerated again,” he added.
Nartatez presented the proposed memorial parker to Jee’s widow Choi Kyung Jin, during her recent visit with South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa, at Camp Crame on Wednesday, July 8.
The development came nearly a decade after Jee was abducted by rogue police officers inside Camp Crame in October 2016 and later killed. The worst part was that the erring cops still demanded ransom after his cadaver was cremated.
During the probe, some witnesses assisted investigators and led to the identification of then police lieutenant colonel Rafael Dumlao, that time assigned to the PNP’s anti-illegal drugs unit.
Dumlao was re-arrested last month after a high court reversed the acquittal made by a local court.
Nartatez also acknowledged the widow’s gratitude to the PNP leadership following the arrest of Dumlao, saying it brought her family a renewed sense of justice.
“Trust is earned through accountability, transparency, and consistent reforms,” Nartatez said.
“While this memorial cannot erase the pain caused by the crime, it symbolizes our willingness to remember, learn from our mistakes, and continue strengthening the institution so the public can have greater confidence in the Philippine National Police,” he emphasized.
