The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) urged mall operators in Metro Manila and other provinces to open their parking spaces and facilities to car owners amid the threat of typhoon “Inday”.
The request was made through a memorandum signed by MMDA chairman Don Artes directed to operators of the shopping mall, especially in the areas that would be affected by the weather disturbance.
While “Inday” already weakened into a typhoon, heavy rains and strong winds are still expected in most part of the country.
At least 12 provinces, most of them are in northern Luzon, are under storm signal number 1.
“In anticipation of the projected strong winds and heavy rainfall due to Super Typhoon Inday" in Metro Manila and other provinces, all shopping mall operators are hereby requested to open the parking spaces in their facilities Luzon-wide to the public for overnight parking, as temporary safe parking spaces for vehicles,” the MMDA memo read.
It said the measure will start on Thursday evening until the passage of the typhoon.
Typhoon ‘Inday” is expected to leave the country’s area of responsibility by Saturday and its effects are most likely felt starting Thursday night to Friday morning.
“Your cooperation in this joint public service effort will greatly help protect lives and properties amid this severe weather event,” the memo read.
Artes said all the official announcements of mall operators will be reposted on MMDA Facebook account and other social media platforms for wider information dissemination.
President Marcos earlier ordered all government agencies to prepare for the worst possible effects of “Inday”.
