BACOLOD CITY – Ashfall blanketed two local government units (LGUs) in Negros Island Region (NIR) which also reached Cebu province following the moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday morning, July 9.
Donato Sermeno, director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-NIR, said ashfall hit San Carlos City, Negros Occidental; Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, and parts of Cebu.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that residents of Barangays Quezon and Buluangan in San Carlos City experienced sulfuric stench and light ashfall.
Residents were strongly advised to wear a mask, especially when outdoors, as volcanic smog can cause respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health concerns.
Rapid road clearing through water flushing was conducted to clear the road from volcanic ash in Barangay Buluangan.
Work in local and national government offices were suspended starting 1 p.m. on Thursday, except for those rendering essential and emergency services.
All face-to-face classes on all levels were also suspended and shifted to alternative modes of learning.
In Canlaon City, ashfall was reported in Barangays Binalbagan, Malaiba, Mabigo, Pula, Lumapao, Bayog, Panubigan, Aquino, and parts of Masulog and Linothangan. Probable volcanic rock fragments were also reported in Barangay Masulog.
The city government distributed face masks as ashfall protection.
The Negros Oriental provincial government reported ashfall in Vallehermoso.
The province of Cebu also recorded ashfall – Cebu City, Toledo City, Balamban, Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova, Mandaue City, Aloguinsan, Pinamungajan, Minglanilla, Naga City, Talisay Citty, Liloan, and Consolacion.
Classes were cancelled due to ashfall in Talisay City, Toledo City, Cebu City, Minglanilla, Naga City, Mandaue City, Cordova, Consolacion, Pinamungajan, Aloguinsan, Asturias, Liloan, Carcar City, Balamban, Tuburan, Barili, and Dumanjug.
Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro directed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to closely monitor the ashfall and placed the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and all Capitol-run provincial and district hospitals on heightened alert for any health or emergency concerns.
Baricuatro urged the public, especially affected areas, to stay indoors as much as possible, and wear face masks when going outside.
Sermeno said the eruption was similar to March 15 and Feb. 19 and 26 this year.
He said that they are currently monitoring the possible flow of debris from the volcano, particularly in Barangay Biak na Bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental, amid the threat of super typhoon Inday that may bring heavy rains to NIR on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11.
Sermeno said no evacuation was reported.
Kanlaon Volcano first erupted on June 3, 2024, that displaced thousands of residents in Negros Island.
