The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday, July 8, announced that it has placed multiple of its districts across the country on heightened operational readiness as Super Typhoon “Inday” moved closer to Northern Luzon, with response teams, rescue assets, and patrol units on standby for possible emergencies.
The PCG said Coast Guard District Northeastern Luzon has intensified maritime patrols, port monitoring, and the enforcement of sea travel advisories under its Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response and Enforcement (iCARE) campaign.
“Response teams have been placed on standby for immediate deployment. Land, sea, and air assets have been strategically positioned to ensure rapid response,” the Coast Guard District Northeastern Luzon said.
The district also appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities as the typhoon approached Northern Luzon, where the storm is expected to bring heavy rains and rough seas.
“The public is advised to comply with sea travel advisories and follow the directives of local authorities,” it added.
Inday slightly intensified while moving west northwestward over the Philippine Sea east of Northern Luzon. It was last located at 1,270 kilometers east of Northern Luzon as of 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Preparing for 'Inday'
Preparations were also stepped up in other parts of the country even outside the projected path of the typhoon as the PCG ordered its field units to prepare for possible rescue and humanitarian operations.
In Northwestern Luzon, the Coast Guard said Deployable Response Groups (DRGs) have been positioned in strategic areas while all stations and substations have activated contingency measures.
“Response assets have been inspected and prepositioned, while close coordination has been established with local government units, disaster risk reduction and management councils, and partner agencies to ensure a swift and coordinated response,” the Coast Guard District Northwestern Luzon said.
“Continuous monitoring of weather developments is likewise underway to facilitate the timely deployment of personnel and resources,” it added.
The district also urged coastal communities to stay informed as weather conditions continue to change.
“We urge fisherfolk and residents of coastal communities to monitor official weather bulletins and comply with the directives of local authorities for their safety,” it said.
In Aurora province, the PCG deployed response teams after the Regional Training Center Aurora placed its DRGs on standby for search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response operations.
The PCG said trained personnel and response capabilities have been readied for immediate deployment should conditions worsen.
The PCG also raised alert status in Coast Guard District Bicol, Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao, and Coast Guard Station Romblon.
In Southern Tagalog, all DRGs have been placed on full alert while personnel, vehicles, and rescue equipment remain ready for immediate deployment. The PCG also advised fishermen to temporarily avoid sailing and directed all vessels, especially small boats, to stay ashore while severe weather persists.
In Romblon, Coast Guard personnel conducted information drives among fishermen, boat operators, and residents living along the coast before the expected impact of the typhoon. They were advised to prepare emergency supplies and coordinate with local governments for possible evacuation.
Meanwhile, Coast Guard District Bicol said its personnel, land assets, and floating assets remain ready to provide immediate search and rescue response and humanitarian assistance.
The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao also mobilized its deployable response groups and placed all stations and substations under heightened alert.
It said personnel and assets remain on standby while continuous monitoring and coordination are being carried out to safeguard communities. It also urged the public to remain vigilant and strictly observe safety measures issued by authorities.
