CEBU CITY – The province of Cebu, home to a P12-billion hog industry, has intensified its campaign against African Swine Fever (ASF).
Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro on Tuesday, July 7, issued an Executive Order (EO) banning the entry of hogs and pork products from Negros Island Region (NIR). The restriction came after hog deaths caused by ASF were reported in some areas in NIR.
“This decision comes from balancing disease prevention as well as considering our economic aspect of this industry,” said provincial veterinarian Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy.
Vincoy said the province will continue its active surveillance to remain ASF-free.
Aside from the 45-day ban, Baricuatro also urged strict implementation of biosecurity measures. “Limit access to farms to essential personnel only, subject to proper disinfection protocols,” Baricuatro said.
Hog raisers and stakeholders were urged to regularly disinfect vehicles, equipment, footwear used in farm operations, and strictly comply with animal movement regulations.
The EO was enforced a few days after Gov. Aris Aumentado issued a directive prohibiting the entry of pigs and pork products to Bohol from NIR.
