Before Hollywood, Dolly de Leon had Eugene Domingo in her corner
Actress-comedienne Eugene Domingo has opened up about the generosity she quietly extended to fellow actress Dolly de Leon long before the latter found international acclaim.
Speaking with Kapamilya broadcaster Karmina Constantino in an interview uploaded on YouTube last month, Domingo reacted after de Leon revealed that Eugene had once helped pay for her child's education and even shouldered some of their household expenses during difficult times.
"Nagulat nga ako na naikuwento pa niya 'yan," Domingo admitted.
"We're sisters. You help your sister, brother. We have the same mentor, si Tony Mabesa. So kapag nakita mo 'yung kasama mo sa paggawa ng maraming produksyon, kasama mo sa frustrations, successes... bakit walang pambayad ng kuryente? Walang pampaaral ng anak? Tapos ikaw na may extra, hindi mo ba tutulungan?"
For Domingo, helping someone should never come with expectations.
"And then pag tinulungan mo, kalimutan mo na. Hindi na para gawin siyang string to hold them closer. Kalimutan mo na 'yun. Tinulong mo na 'yun eh. Anong gusto mo, habang buhay tatanawin?"
The actress said she has always felt protective of the people closest to her, describing generosity as something that should come naturally.
"Ang Leo, ma-protect 'yan sa kanyang jungle. Gusto ko at least 'yung mga nayayakap o nasasakop ng space ko ay maayos at masaya."
She added, "Gusto ko, lahat tayo, gumagana ang creativity. 'Yung generosity natin ay madali. Ayaw ko nang may nagugutom."
Years later, Domingo has watched with pride as de Leon emerged as one of the Philippines' biggest success stories, earning international recognition and building a career that now spans both local productions and Hollywood.
"Ako 'yung unang-una na parang, 'Diyos ko. Mabuti naman nakaahon siya.' She's really talented. She really likes this. Proud na proud ako. Alam ko 'yung pinagdaanan naming lahat."
Domingo's remarks have resonated with many online—not only because they offer a glimpse into her long friendship with de Leon, but also because they challenge the often-discussed Filipino concept of "utang na loob."
For the actress, genuine generosity is simple: help when you can, then let it go. The greatest reward is seeing someone you've believed in finally thrive.
