'Too much coincidence' as VP Duterte, Marcoleta both face woes, says Davao-based solon

Pwersa ng Pilipinong Pandagat (PPP) Party-list Rep. Harold Duterte is incredulous that an arrest warrant would be issued against Senator Rodante Marcoleta on the same day as the start of Vice President Sara Duterte’s Senate impeachment trial.
"This is too much of a coincidence," Rep. Duterte said in a statement Monday afternoon, July 6 just before the Senate impeachment court convened for the Vice President's case.
"It’s one thing to hold the VP for trial, but with the impending arrest of Sen Marcoleta, 15.3 million Filipinos are essentially deprived of their vote for Sen. Marcoleta," said Rep. Duterte, who is from Davao City.
By that time, Marcoleta, a perceived supporter of the Vice President, was already arrested while at the Sandiganbayan.
Marcoleta was at the anti-graft court on Monday morning for the hearing on his motions to quash the information charging him with plunder and to defer the issuance of warrant of arrest in connection with the alleged nondisclosure P75 million worth of campaign donations in the 2025 elections.
Senators are tasked to serve as judges in the high-stakes trial. The Constitution says a two-thirds vote (16 out of 24 senators) is needed to convict an impeachable officer on trial.
Rep. Duterte--a cousin of the Vice President--said a spade should be called a spade.
"Let’s say it like it actually is, everything is being done for our next president to be disqualified from the next election," he said.
"There are 2 more budget cycles before the next election, and way too many unanswered questions from the previous years. How I wish as much energy and resources would be poured in to solving our countries real problems," he added.
"For now, let us continue supporting Sen.Marcoleta and our [next] president, VPSD," the rookie congressman further said.
Should she get convicted, Vice President Duterte will be removed from her current post and banned from holding public office.
