16 Glan beach resorts reopen following 7.8-quake

DAVAO CITY – Almost a month since the magnitude-7.8 struck Sarangani, 16 beach resorts in the town of Glan have reopened after securing clearances from the local government’s Office of the Building Official.
In a statement from the provincial government, Glan Tourism Officer Rhoa Wadingan said that five resorts opened in Taluya; four in Gumasa, the home of the famous SarBay Festival; three in Cablalan, and one each in Kapatan, Lago, Tango, and Pangyan.
Gov. Rogelio Pacquiao said the reopening of beach resorts is a crucial step in restoring the livelihood of tourism workers. Pacquiao also disclosed that several Department of Tourism-accredited establishments that sustained heavier structural damage are expected to resume operations by the end of July.
Glan is one of the top popular tourist destinations in southern Mindanao for its white sand beaches. A portion of the coastline in the municipality was affected by the massive coastal uplift due to the June 8 earthquake.
Glan is the most heavily-affected town in Sarangani due to its proximity to the offshore epicenter, affecting over 110,000 persons in almost all of its 31 barangays.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape reported that the uplift spans roughly 373 hectares in five coastal barangays - Pangyan, Small Margus, Big Margus, Batulaki, and San Jose. Damage to seagrass beds and coral reefs was estimated at P45 billion, DENR said.
The local government said that only one resort was affected by the coastal uplift in Barangay Pangyan. Authorities have restricted the access to uplifted areas while a full scientific assessment is underway.
