Nartatez orders dismissal of cop tagged in robbery-slay of fellow officer in Zamboanga del Sur

Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), on Sunday, July 5, directed the initiation of dismissal proceedings against a police officer accused of taking part in the robbery and killing of a fellow policeman in Zamboanga del Sur.
Nartatez issued the directive after the surrender of Police Staff Sgt. Archie Bazan, assigned to the Margosatubig Municipal Police Station, was implicated in the killing of Police Corporal Armaejo Unab Jornadal, 36, a member of the 2nd Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Mobile Force Company.
“It is deeply disheartening and unacceptable when a member of our own ranks betrays the badge and the trust of the public. This act of cold-blooded treachery is not reflective of the vast majority of our policemen,” Nartatez said.
“We will show no leniency to any officer who chooses the path of criminality. We will ensure they face the full and uncompromising force of the law,” Nartatez added.
Jornadal was ambushed by two motorcycle-riding assailants in Barangay Tikwas, Dumalinao on July 1 while he was on his way home from Pagadian City.
Investigators said the police corporal had withdrawn about P214,000 from the Armed Forces and Police Savings and Loans Association Inc. before the attack. The suspects allegedly took the cash and the victim’s service firearm, prompting investigators to pursue robbery as the primary motive.
Police launched hot pursuit operations that led to the surrender of Bazan, who admitted driving the getaway motorcycle. He also identified a certain Cydee Tolentino Labajo as the alleged gunman, who was later arrested in a follow-up operation. The victim’s service gun was also recovered from the shooter.
Police said Labajo allegedly used Bazan’s firearm in the attack.
Meanwhile, Nartatez assured Jornadal's family that the PNP would continue to support them while the criminal and administrative cases are being pursued.
“To the family of Police Corporal Jornadal, I offer my deepest sympathies and my personal commitment that we will not rest until full justice is served for this senseless loss,” he said.
“The PNP will provide all necessary financial assistance and see to it that his service and sacrifice are honored with the dignity he rightfully earned,” he added.
The PNP said it has ordered the immediate processing of Jornadal's death benefits, financial assistance, insurance claims, and educational assistance for his qualified beneficiaries while the cases against the suspects move forward.
