There is a version of Coron that most travelers know by heart.
It is the Coron of turquoise waters and towering limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and sun-drenched island-hopping itineraries.
A spectacular view from the Kayangan Lake.
It is the destination that fills social media feeds and travel bucket lists, drawing visitors from around the world to one of the Philippines' most celebrated island escapes.
But beyond the lagoons lies another Coron, a quieter one.
Officially relaunched in June under the stewardship of Araw Hospitality Group and guided by the theme Rooted in Wonder, Bacau Bay's transformation goes beyond refreshed spaces and new experiences. It reflects a growing belief that the future of tourism is not simply about seeing more destinations, but about forming deeper connections with the places people visit.
It reveals itself in the mangrove forests that line the coast, in communities that have long called the island home, and in the slower rhythms of a place that exists beyond the day's excursions.
It is this side of Coron that Bacau Bay seeks to celebrate as it enters a new chapter.
The transformation also reflects a broader vision for the property. In 2025, management transitioned to Araw Hospitality Group to elevate Bacau Bay into a world-class resort while preserving the authentic Filipino warmth and sense of place that have long defined the destination. Returning guests will discover refreshed accommodations, three new dining concepts—Kaigan Teppanyaki Bar, Sirena Pier Bar, and Pugon Beachside Pizzeria—and a revitalized Alon Spa, each thoughtfully designed to complement the property's deeper connection to Coron's natural and cultural identity.
For destinations like Coron, that idea has become increasingly important.
Tourism has brought opportunities, livelihoods, and global recognition to the island. Yet as visitor numbers continue to increase, conversations about sustainability have expanded beyond environmental protection. They now include questions of identity, community, and how destinations can preserve what makes them meaningful.
Named after the bakawan trees that thrive along Coron's shores, Bacau Bay draws inspiration from an ecosystem often overlooked despite its importance.
Mangroves protect coastlines from erosion, serve as nurseries for marine life, support biodiversity, and help communities adapt to environmental change. They are among nature's quiet achievers—rarely the main attraction, yet essential to the health of the landscape around them.
Like the mangroves that deepen their roots to reach new heights, Bacau Bay's transformation reflects a commitment to growth without losing sight of the place, people, and natural environment that define its identity.
There is a lesson in that.
The places that leave the deepest impressions are not always the most photographed. Often, they are the places that make people feel connected.
During the relaunch, Jean Henri Lhuillier, Chief Enlightener and CEO of Araw Hospitality Group, shared the vision behind Bacau Bay's transformation.
"Bacau Bay is not a new name in Coron. We first opened our doors back in 2019 under PJ Lhuillier Inc. Over the years, we built a solid foundation here. But as the travel landscape evolved, we realized that this property was capable of much more," he said.
That realization led to the property's transition to Araw Hospitality Group.
"Our mandate for Araw with this property is straightforward: to scale Bacau Bay into a world-class resort," Lhuillier said. "The goal is to elevate our standards, infrastructure, and service to compete globally, while injecting the same distinct flair and authentic Filipino soul that defines every single Araw property."
For Lhuillier, however, exceptional hospitality is measured not only by facilities but by the relationships guests build with a destination.
"We wanted our guests to feel a sense of belonging—not just to a resort, but to the destination," he said.
In many ways, that idea of belonging reflects a broader shift in travel, one that values slower experiences and deeper connections over simply checking destinations off a list.
