OFW from Isabela rescues fellow migrant worker from drowning in Taiwan
CAUAYAN CITY, Isabela – An Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) from this city was feted on social media for rescuing a fellow OFW who was swept away by raging water in a tourist destination in Taiwan recently.
Dhen Mark Quitoriano Suga, a resident of Barangay Minante 1, said he and his co-workers were visiting the area during their day-off.
Suga said continuous rains made the area dangerous due to strong currents and slippery rocks.
The OFW was posing for a photograph when she slipped and carried away downstream. Many people witnessed the incident but no one came to her aid because of the hazardous conditions.
Suga rushed to help and initially managed to grab the victim but they lost their footing on the slippery rocks and dragged farther by the current.
The woman disappeared underwater and Suga jumped in to save her. They eventually found a vine to cling to while waiting for help.
Suga recalled that, fearing they would both drown, told the woman to let go so he could save himself. Terrified, she held on even tighter.
The pair were rescued by people in the area after several minutes. One of Suga’s companions who also tried to help was swept downstream but was rescued.
Suga, who has worked in Taiwan for five years, said helping others is important but stressed the need to consider one’s own safety during emergencies.
He urged fellow OFWs to be cautious when visiting tourist spots, especially during bad weather, and reminded them that they work abroad to build a better future for their families in the Philippines.
