Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) has intrigued filmmakers for decades.

More often than not, however, audiences encounter it in psychological thrillers, mysteries or horror films, from "Sybil" and "Identity" to "Split."

That's what makes Viva One's upcoming series "Love U Lots" an interesting proposition.

Instead of treating DID as the source of fear or suspense, the eight-episode series builds a romantic comedy around a character living with the condition.

But the show's biggest gamble may not be its premise at all.

It also pairs that premise with the easy chemistry between Wilbert Ross and Bea Binene, one of today's fastest-rising love teams.

Will it work?

If the series' recent launch was any indication, Wilbert and Bea already have one important ingredient working in their favor: an enthusiastic fan base.

We got a glimpse of that during the Manila mall launch, where the pair were welcomed by deafening screams.

The cheers were so loud that the actors often struggled to make themselves heard.

Wilbert himself looked genuinely overwhelmed.

"Grabe, grabe naman... maraming, maraming salamat," he managed to say, though his words were almost drowned out by the cheering.

Bea, meanwhile, remained composed, smiling and waving at the crowd while even greeting several fans by name.

For Bea, portraying Ysa, a gifted painter living with DID, came with a unique set of challenges.

"Exciting siya for me because it's something new, something fresh," she shared. "Tsaka, mahirap. Kasi yung transitions ko, like when I change into different personalities, dapat seamless so, mabilis. Nakakapagod, actually."

Bea was quick to emphasize that the production was mindful of depicting a real mental health condition.

"Of course, we did our research and we have advisers on set kasi nga, it's a real disorder. Ayaw naman namin siyempre maka-offend. Dito, people could somehow get to know what it is while at the same time enjoy the kilig, the romance."

Wilbert, who plays Estong, a young man trying to rebuild his life after heartbreak and financial loss, said viewers shouldn't expect an overly heavy drama despite the serious premise.

"Cute ang story ng mga characters namin dito. Kwela ang flow ng story, very light and entertaining siya."

Director Victor Villanueva said the challenge extended beyond telling a different kind of love story. He also had to meet the expectations of fans eager to see Wilbert and Bea together again.

"This is way different than the first and therein lies the challenge," he said. "We want to bring back the fans of 'Golden Scenery of Tomorrow' but at the same time pull in new ones who want something new from Wilbert and Bea. So, I just hope people enjoy their new journey as a love team."

Joining the cast are Xia Vigor, Vito Quizon, Katya Santos, DJ Durano, Janno Gibbs, Migo Valid and Candy Pangilinan.

If Hollywood has long treated DID as the stuff of suspense and psychological drama, "Love U Lots" is making a case for romance.
