In a notice dated July 2, the Impeachment Court directed Duterte to appear before the court on July 6, pursuant to Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trial and in accordance to the writ of summons issued against her on May 19.
“You are hereby notified that trial will commence on the 6th day of July at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and are further directed to appear on said date, in person or through counsel, before the Impeachment Court at the Session Hall of the Senate of the Philippines, Pasay City,” the notice reads.
The trial will commence at 2 p.m. and will be initially held weekly from Monday to Wednesday before the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on July 27.
After the SONA, the impeachment proceedings will be held from Tuesday to Thursday at 2 p.m. onwards.
Also on July 2, the Senate Impeachment Court issued a notice to the House of Representatives that it is now ready to proceed with the trial.
Earlier, an all-senator caucus was held in preparation for the impeachment trial. Majority senators who were present at the caucus were Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, Erwin Tulfo, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Risa Hontiveros and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri.
Senators Loren Legarda and Robinhood “Robin” Padilla, who are members of the minority bloc led by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, were also present during the caucus.
In a Facebook post, Padilla thanked Lacson for supporting the proposals of Sen. Legarda during the caucus.
When asked about the impeachment trial, Sen. Erwin Tulfo refrained to comment but confirmed that the meeting was to make sure that all the senator-judges would be “in one page.”
“All we discussed about was the impeachment, we were given documents to follow the sequencing,” Tulfo said.
