Marikina donates sewing machines, hygiene kits to boost PDLs' welfare
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)–Marikina City Jail received sewing machines, television sets, and hygiene kits from the Marikina City government in support of rehabilitation efforts and the welfare of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
On Friday, July 3, Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Teodoro and Marikina First District Rep. Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro turned over the donations to Supt. Rodel Cadpino and Acting City Jail Warden Senior Inspector Rosebelle Vasquez of the Marikina City Jail.
The local government said the donations were made in response to the BJMP’s request for additional hygiene supplies and equipment to accommodate more PDLs participating in livelihood and skills development activities.
Currently, there are 846 male PDLs at the Marikina City Jail–Male Dormitory and 196 female PDLs at the Female Dormitory.
The donations included four sewing machines intended to help PDLs develop livelihood skills by making rugs, mats, and other products that they can use to earn a living after their release.
Hygiene kits were also donated, which the mayor said were intended to help address the PDLs' daily needs and improve their living conditions by supporting their health, sanitation, and personal hygiene while inside the facility.
The city government also donated new television sets to provide PDLs with access to educational programs, information, and recreational activities as part of their rehabilitation.
During the visit, the mayor said the local government would continue supporting the city jail's rehabilitation and reintegration programs, as well as initiatives addressing the welfare and daily needs of PDLs.
“Even behind bars, PDLs remain valued members of our community. The city government is fully committed to support programs and activities that will enable them to gain and nurture new skills, and hopefully boost their confidence and inspire them throughout their rehabilitation,” she said.
She also urged the PDLs not to lose hope and to strive for a better life.
“Every day is an opportunity to change your lives for the better. Huwag kayo mawalan ng pag-asa. Patuloy kayo magsikap para sa mas magandang kinabukasan (Don't lose hope. Keep working hard for a better future),” she added.
