Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla has asked the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to approve a one-year extension in the active service of Police Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan, regional director of the Police Regional Office in Calabarzon (PRO 4A), saying his continued leadership is needed to sustain ongoing police operations in the region.
Remulla submitted the request on Friday, July 3, a week before Marantan reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56 on July 10.
In his request, Remulla said Marantan's continued service is necessary because he is leading several major police operations in the region.
“This request is being made in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations currently being spearheaded by General Marantan,” Remulla said.
The request falls under Section 39 of Republic Act No. 6975, or the DILG Act of 1990, which sets the compulsory retirement age for police personnel at 56. The same provision allows Napolcom to retain an officer with the rank of chief superintendent, director, or deputy director general for an unextendible period of one year.
Marantan assumed command of Police Regional Office 4A on March 9, 2026 after Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered a leadership reshuffle that placed him at the helm of the Calabarzon police force.
Remulla said keeping Marantan in office would ensure there is no disruption in the implementation of the operations now under his supervision.
“This request is being made in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations currently being spearheaded by General Marantan,” Remulla said.
Before taking over the Calabarzon command, Marantan served as director of the Davao City Police Office. He led the operation that resulted in the arrest of religious leader Apollo Quiboloy.
He also headed the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in the National Capital Region, where he supervised investigations into high-profile crimes and coordinated major law enforcement operations.
Marantan belongs to the Philippine National Police Academy "Kabalikat" Class of 1998. He has served in several key police assignments before his appointment as regional director of Police Regional Office 4A.
As of posting, Napolcom has yet to act on Remulla's request for the one-year extension.
