The MMDA made the announcement on June 30, during the kick-off ceremony of the Nature-Based Sidewalk Improvement Project along C-5 Road, held in partnership with the Pasig City government.
The approximately three-kilometer sidewalk improvement project covers the stretch from Ortigas Avenue to Bagong Ilog.
The agency said it was launched in response to the Pasig City government's request for assistance in repairing and rehabilitating the sidewalks.
“Existing sidewalks in the city using traditional impervious concrete sidewalks will be replaced by a permeable pavement system with landscaping, and when possible, stormwater detention tanks,” it said.
The permeable pavers (bricks) are made from crushed recycled glass and hard plastics collected from rivers as part of the agency’s waste diversion program.
It added that the pavers are environmentally-friendly and are designed to improve drainage and withstand heavy loads and harsh weather conditions. The pavers came from the agency’s Integrated Solid Waste Management Processing Facility in Vitas Pumping Station.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said the location serves as the pilot area for the project aimed at improving walkability and addressing environmental and flood concerns in the metropolis.
“With the integration of green infrastructure, this project can prevent land subsidence (pagbaba ng lupa),” he said.
“Rainwater is allowed to pass through, reducing runoff and puddling. Instead of the water going directly to the drainage, it will go to the rainwater catchment first which can thus help in mitigating urban flooding,” Artes explained.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto speaks during the kick-off ceremony of the Nature-Based Sidewalk Improvement Project along C-5 Road.
Also present at the event were Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, Vice Mayor Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr., and Rep. Roman Romulo, who expressed full support for the project.
Sotto described the project as “an innovative solution” in attaining the goal of a walkable Metro Manila, while Jaworski hoped that Pasig would be able to replicate the project in their respective sidewalk improvements in the city’s inner streets.
Romulo, meanwhile, highlighted mental health, saying that walkable streets may help promote mental wellness.
The MMDA said the project is expected to be completed within six months, with plans to expand it to other LGUs in the National Capital Region.
