The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) urged Filipinos to sustain disaster preparedness beyond annual campaigns as it opened the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) on Wednesday, July 1, in Pasay City.
OCD Administrator Undersecretary Harold Cabreros said resilience requires continuous effort as the country faces natural hazards, climate-related threats, and other emerging risks.
“The message of resilience is not new but its importance grows even more urgent as we continue to face hazards, climate-related threats, and other emerging risks. Building resilience requires sustained commitment and meaningful collaboration among all sectors of society,” Cabreros said.
The month-long observance carries the theme, “Naghahanda at Kumikilos Tungo sa Panatag na Bagong Pilipinas.” The kickoff ceremony was held at SM Mall of Asia in partnership with SM Prime and SM ARISE.
According to the OCD, this year's theme emphasizes that preparedness is the foundation of resilience and that coordinated action before, during, and after disasters can reduce the impact of hazards.
“By fostering a culture of preparedness and informed decision-making, we become active partners in protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment,” Cabreros said.
Cabreros renewed the agency's call for a whole-of-society approach to disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).
“We continue to advocate for a whole-of-society approach to disaster risk reduction and management. No single institution can address the threats posed by hazards and disasters alone. Lasting progress can only be achieved when we work together toward a common goal,” he said.
This year's observance will feature a series of activities to strengthen public awareness and disaster response capabilities. These include the Over Coffee Dialogues on disaster preparedness, the Rescuelympics and Rescue Jamboree that will be led by OCD regional offices, and the Panatag Pilipinas Campaign, which seeks to improve public understanding of disaster risks and preparedness measures.
The month-long observance will end with the National Disaster Resilience Month Recognition Ceremony, where government agencies, local government units, and partner organizations with outstanding disaster resilience initiatives will be recognized.
