Manila cops enforce maximum tolerance as Mendiola sealed for rallies
The Manila Police District (MPD) remained on full alert Wednesday, July 1, as authorities tightened security on roads to Malacañang Palace ahead of protests near Mendiola Street.
Maj. Philipp Ines, MPD Public Information chief, told Manila Bulletin that the Manila police will “always observe maximum tolerance,” while urging rallyists to refrain from abuses and to remain compliant with the law.
All major access points to the palace complex were heavily secured, with container vans, concrete barriers, and police barricades deployed to prevent unauthorized entry.
The Philippine National Police augmented MPD personnel, reinforcing key chokepoints and maintaining a strong presence in surrounding areas to deter attempts by rallyists to advance toward restricted zones.
Authorities said maximum tolerance would be strictly observed, allowing peaceful assembly while ensuring that protesters do not breach established security perimeters.
Road closures remained in effect, including stretches from Ayala Bridge to Mendiola, causing traffic disruptions in parts of Manila.
Police officials said the heightened alert is part of standard security measures to safeguard government installations while managing large public gatherings.
As of posting time, no untoward incidents had been reported, with the situation described as generally peaceful.
