- Why does "Hopia, Mani, Popcorn 3" matter when the original hits are just a click away? Viva Records' third installment explores how today's artists breathe new life into timeless OPM classics while preserving their legacy.
The original recordings have never gone away. They're readily available on streaming platforms, played on radio, and passed from one generation to the next. So why make another album of covers?
Because great songs deserve to keep finding new voices.
That has always been the appeal of compilation albums in OPM, particularly those that revisit a defining era in Filipino music. They aren't meant to replace the originals. It's about keeping them in circulation, introducing them to younger listeners while giving artists the chance to interpret songs that helped shape the local music scene.
That's exactly what "Hopia, Mani, Popcorn" has done over the years.
Produced through the collaboration of Viva Records, Vicor Music, Ivory Records, Wild Dream Records, and O/C Records, "Hopia, Mani, Popcorn 3" features a diverse lineup that includes Healy After Dark, Magnus Haven, Cuatro, The Juans, UDD with Bea Lorenzo, Soapdish, Mayonnaise, and Midnight Talking.
For the artists, participating in the project meant becoming part of a much bigger story than simply recording a cover.
"It's such a huge honor to be part of this project because it goes beyond nostalgia. It's more like honoring those who came before us and celebrating them through music, and we're just happy to take part in that," said Bea.
Magnus Haven vocalist Rajih Mendoza hopes listeners discover—or rediscover—the enduring power of the songs themselves.
"Do not underestimate the power of music," he said. "Lahat ng songs dito relatable sa lahat."
Carl Guevara of The Juans views the project as both a privilege and a responsibility.
"Ma-represent mo 'yung kanta na naging bahagi ng buhay ng maraming Pilipino is an honor. Isang karangalan," he said. "There is value in honoring those who came before us. The songs are timeless regardless of genre."
Their sentiments reflect what makes projects like "Hopia, Mani, Popcorn 3" relevant even today. The album doesn't ask listeners to choose between the originals and the remakes. Instead, it allows the classics to continue evolving, reaching audiences who may encounter these songs for the first time through the voices of today's artists.
In an era where music is consumed faster than ever, that's perhaps the greatest value of compilations like this. They remind us that while sounds change, songs with heart never really grow old.
