Cristine Reyes on why winning a talent search is only the beginning
By Neil Ramos
Over the years, reality competitions have become one of the entertainment industry's most effective launching pads. They provide aspiring performers with invaluable exposure, introduce them to millions of viewers, and open doors that might otherwise remain closed. But as many successful artists have proven, making it into a competition is only the first step. What happens afterward depends largely on talent, discipline, and the willingness to keep learning.
No one understands that better than award-winning actress Cristine Reyes.
Herself a product of a talent search, Cristine now serves as one of the judges and mentors on "Viva's Next Big Star," now streaming on Viva One.
"Tuloy-tuloy dapat ang development mo. Walang overnight na star. Pinagtratrabahuan 'yan," she emphasized.
For Cristine, constant improvement is what separates those who simply become known from those who build lasting careers.
She also stressed the importance of remaining teachable, especially for newcomers trying to establish themselves in the business.
"Importante kasi lalo na kung baguhan ka to listen kasi kadalasan very useful ang mga payo na maririnig mo."
Her advice comes from experience.
"Alam naman ng lahat na ako nagsimula rin ako sa reality competition ang 'StarStruck.' Joining the contest is just the beginning talaga. Marami ka pang pagdadaanan along the way so kailangan buo ang loob mo."
Cristine now hopes to pass on those hard-earned lessons as she helps guide a new generation of aspiring stars in "Viva's Next Big Star."
Joining her on the judging panel are multi-awarded filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer Jason Paul Laxamana, known for acclaimed films including "100 Tula Para Kay Stella" and "Just a Stranger," and veteran, award-winning director Mac Alejandre, whose credits include "Let the Love Begin" and "Ang Panday."
Mac echoed Cristine's sentiments, saying reality competitions provide aspiring artists with a valuable head start but are far from the finish line.
"It helps a lot in that it allows you exposure, experience but, of course, it doesn't stop there. What happens next is up to you. Kung gaano mo talaga papahalagahan ang journey mo sa show business."
For Jason Paul, attitude is just as important as talent.
"I think ang pinaka-important is a person's trainability. Yung open ka to listen to good advice. You might have the so-called star quality pero kung yung attitude mo about it mali, wala ring patutunguhan."
This year's competition features eight promising finalists hoping to make their mark in the entertainment industry: Miguel, the Sweet Cheerful Boy of Davao City; Kurt, the Gamer-tista of Rizal; Mish, the Hobby Hoarder of Davao City; Lougee, the Charming TikToker of Caloocan City; Jaycee, the Popstar of Laguna; Calvin, the Martial Artist of Parañaque; Mina, the Rising Superstar of Muntinlupa; and Jamie, the Shy Sweetheart of Bulacan.
Despite competing for the top prize, the finalists shared that they now consider one another family. Win or lose, they vowed to support each other and remain friends even after the competition ends.
Directed by Ryan Evangelista, "Viva's Next Big Star" promises to showcase every step of the contestants' journeys, from backstage preparations and exclusive behind-the-scenes moments to the performances that could launch the country's next generation of stars.
Fresh episodes stream every Friday, exclusively on Viva One.
