Thousands join INC rally on EDSA, demand accountability

Thousands of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) members gathered near the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City on Tuesday, June 30, for an emergency rally demanding accountability amid controversy over alleged irregularities in government funds.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) estimated the crowd at around 9,000, prompting authorities to deploy hundreds of security personnel and implement traffic adjustments across the area.
INC spokesperson Bro. Edwil Zabala said the rally was organized in support of Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who is facing possible plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan.
He added that the group backs Marcoleta’s efforts to investigate alleged irregularities in flood control funds, stressing that INC is calling for accountability and a fair resolution.
Security operations began as early as 3 a.m., with around 500 police officers stationed to maintain peace and order.
The rally followed an earlier gathering near the monument that had already disrupted traffic along EDSA-White Plains after groups occupied portions of the road.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported closures along the EDSA Ortigas Service Road, EDSA Ortigas Flyover, and White Plains Avenue.
Traffic on both northbound and southbound lanes slowed to a crawl, prompting advisories for motorists to expect delays and take alternate routes.
Tensions rose when authorities attempted to clear vehicles blocking EDSA-White Plains Avenue.
Police said some individuals resisted efforts to tow buses affecting traffic flow, leading to confrontations and several arrests.
One officer was injured during the incident, though the EDSA Busway was later reopened to motorists.
Authorities emphasized that while they respect the right to peaceful assembly, EDSA must remain accessible to the public.
Security measures remained in place as monitoring continued throughout the day.
