Mother of Tacloban school shooting victim welcomes Senate probe

TACLOBAN CITY – The mother of one of the victims of the mass school shooting inside a campus here has welcomed the Senate's planned investigation into the tragic incident, expressing hope that it will lead to stronger measures to ensure school safety.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Erbea Fabian said she is optimistic that the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality's July 1 hearing will help uncover the truth and serve as a wake-up call about the need to improve campus security.
"We welcome the Senate investigation to uncover the truth. Initially, we planned to attend, but we decided not to because we are still grieving," said Erbea, mother of 15-year-old Chris Lorenz Fabian, one of the victims of the June 22 shooting at San Jose National High School.
Chris Lorenz, hailed as a hero for sacrificing himself to protect his classmates during the attack, was laid to rest on Tuesday at Superior Memorial Gardens in this city.
On June 23, committee chair Sen. Risa Hontiveros announced that the panel would conduct an inquiry into the incident.
Hundreds of mourners, including classmates, teachers, relatives, friends, and members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, attended Fabian's funeral service.
The other two student victims are scheduled to be buried on July 1 and July 2.
After the funeral, Erbea renewed her appeal to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to hold the shooter's aunt accountable.
"If the 14-year-old shooter had not brought a firearm to school, my son would still be alive. Please, Mr. President, help us find justice," she said after Chris Lorenz was accorded military honors in recognition of his bravery.
The Philippine National Police earlier confirmed that the firearm used in the campus shooting was a service weapon issued to a police officer, the aunt of the 14-year-old suspect.
The police officer, a staff sergeant, is currently in restrictive custody at the regional headquarters in Palo, Leyte, while she faces an administrative investigation for grave misconduct and neglect of duty. (PNA)
