Motorists were caught off guard early Tuesday, June 30, as a surprise rally organized by members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) drew a growing crowd at Liwasang Bonifacio in Ermita, Manila, causing traffic buildup in surrounding roads.
As of 9 a.m., the program remains ongoing, with the crowd estimated at around 400 and still increasing.
Participants began arriving as early as 3 a.m., setting up a stage and sound system that gave the gathering a concert-like atmosphere.
Police Major Philipp Ines, spokesperson of the Manila Police District (MPD), said Liwasang Bonifacio is a designated Freedom Park, allowing public assemblies without the need for a permit.
Rallyists carried placards and chanted calls such as “We Want the Truth,” “Don’t bend the law,” and “No to selective justice,” alongside Filipino slogans including “Ang kurap kinakanlong, ang nagbunyag kinukulong (The corrupt are protected, while those who expose them are jailed)” and “Huwag ipakulong ang nag-iimbestiga” (Do not jail those who are investigating).
Despite heavy rains earlier in the morning, the crowd continued to grow.
The unexpected turnout contributed to traffic congestion along P. Burgos Avenue and nearby roads in Ermita.
Police presence was monitored in the area, including the arrival of a station commander around 8:45 a.m., as authorities continued to oversee the situation.
Meanwhile, a separate rally was also being held along EDSA, adding to the number of demonstrators across Metro Manila.
Authorities continue to monitor both gatherings as programs progress.
