GOSSIP GIRL: Why Liza Diño Seguerra's birthday bash had me reaching for my waterproof mascara
I’ve hosted enough birthday celebrations to know that when the birthday celebrant starts crying before the cake is even sliced, something special is happening.
This time, though, there was no host—just me as a guest, standing beside birthday girl Liza Diño Seguerra as she blew out her candles. Suddenly, the tears came. Not the cute, single-tear-for-the-camera kind. Talagang hagulgol.
Naturally, my first instinct was, “Naku, baka napasobra ang candle smoke!” But no. Liza was simply overwhelmed as she celebrated her 45th birthday.
Imagine looking around the room and seeing decades' worth of friendships gathered in one place. Friends from every chapter of your life. Friends who stayed through victories, heartbreaks, politics, showbiz, reinventions, and everything in between.
That's enough to melt even the toughest mascara. Mine almost surrendered.
I cornered her better half, singer Ice Seguerra. The chairperson of Fire and Ice Entertainment laughed before admitting a little secret—one Liza would probably rather not have broadcast. But then again, that's what Gossip Girl's column is for.
"Liza has been going through what they call the 'birthday blues.' It's not because she's getting older. We've all stopped counting birthdays after twenty-five anyway. It's because, after years of public service, she's finally back where her heart has always belonged—creating.
"Liza is happiest when she's passionate about her work. She's one of those rare people who simply cannot sit still. If she's resting, she's probably planning three projects in her head."
What touched Ice the most was seeing just how loved Liza still is. Some of the guests hadn't seen her in years, yet they showed up without hesitation. That's not popularity. That's legacy.
Then came the exciting news.
Fresh from Poland, Ice excitedly dished on what's cooking at Fire and Ice Entertainment. Their biggest baby right now is a series called "Never the Bride." And before anyone thinks this is just another production rushing to beat a deadline, think again.
They're treating it like Michelin-starred cuisine—slow-cooked, carefully seasoned, with every ingredient measured to perfection.
"The actors and writers go through intensive workshops before filming even begins. There are international mentors, online coaching sessions, onsite character immersion—the works. Pinag-isipan at pinaghandaan talaga. That's why we flew to Poland for lab work specifically for 'Never the Bride,'” Ice told Gossip Girl.
In today's world of "bahala na" productions, that's definitely refreshing.
As if that weren't enough, Ice and Liza are also busy with their podcast, "Talk Sheets with Ice and Liza," now on its third season on Spotify and YouTube.
"It started when we'd go live at two in the morning because, apparently, insomnia can be productive," Ice shared with Gossip Girl. "We talk about relationships, work, mental health, and yes, even our own disagreements. Walang plastikan—just honest conversations served with humor."
Music? Check.
"We recently released 'Ikaw ang Wakas,' co-written by me and Liza, as a beautiful follow-up to the well-loved 'Sa Iyo Bumabalik.' If you've ever loved, lost, and found your way back—just like we did—you'll understand the song immediately."
And for those who've been missing great live music, Fire and Ice Productions is bringing the Sessionistas to the Solaire Theater on August 22 at 8 p.m., featuring Ice Seguerra and Fire and Ice talent Princess Velasco. Joining them are fellow Sessionistas Nyoy Volante, Sitti Navarro, Kean Cipriano, Duncan Ramos, and Juris. Knowing this lineup, expect goosebumps—and probably another reason to wear waterproof mascara.
Happy birthday, dear Liza.
You've built something far greater than projects or positions. You've built relationships that have stood the test of time. That's a kind of success no award can ever measure.
And Ice... please convince your wife to get some sleep once in a while. Although, knowing the two of you, that's probably the most impossible production you'll ever mount.
