PAL resumes Dubai flights in October as Middle East tensions ease

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) is resuming its direct service between Manila and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it looks to take advantage of easing conditions in the Middle East while restoring connectivity to a major gateway for overseas Filipinos.

In an advisory on Monday, June 29, PAL said it will operate nonstop flights between Manila and Dubai starting on Oct. 2, just before the peak holiday travel season.

PAL will operate the service every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with afternoon departures from Manila and evening arrivals in Dubai.

The airline said it plans to gradually increase flight frequencies back to daily service once conditions in the Middle East improve further, especially if the four-month conflict in the region finally comes to an end.

PAL earlier suspended flights to Dubai to prioritize the safety of its passengers and crew as tensions escalated in the Middle East after the United States (US) and Israel launched attacks against Iran, triggering further hostilities.

While it remains to be seen when the conflict will end, signs of easing conditions have become more apparent as the US and Iran recently sought to secure a deal to end the war.

By resuming flights to Dubai, PAL is restoring much-needed direct connectivity to the UAE, which is home to many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Preliminary data from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) showed that 397,892, or around 18.5 percent of all OFWs, were based in the UAE last year.

Since Dubai is home to one of the world’s busiest airports, Dubai International Airport, PAL expects the service to strengthen connectivity for travelers flying onward to other destinations in the Middle East, as well as Africa and Europe.

“The restoration of nonstop services also comes as travel between the Philippines and the UAE becomes more convenient for many Filipino travelers,” PAL said.

The UAE announced last week that eligible Filipino passport holders may now obtain a visa on arrival if they hold a valid visa, residence permit, or Green Card issued by the US, the European Union (EU), Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Canada, or New Zealand.

To mark the return of its Manila-Dubai service, PAL will offer an introductory all-in round-trip fare starting at $650 for a limited period.

Earlier this month, the airline announced that it would resume its nonstop operations between Manila and Doha, Qatar, beginning on Wednesday, July 1.
