Funding barangay projects will not result in the massive flood-control scandal, President Marcos said.
Marcos expressed confidence that the P200,000 allocated to barangays nationwide to fund local projects and provide scholarships for students struggling to complete their education due to financial constraints will not be plagued by corruption.
During his visit to Maimbung, Sulu, on Monday, June 29, to lead the distribution of rice and financial assistance, Marcos said he believes the funds provided to villages will be handled well by the barangay officials.
"May nagtanong, nakakasiguro ba tayo na gagamitin sa tama 'yan? Sabi ko, hindi kayo nakakaintindi ng local government. Ang local government, hindi kayang gawin yung ginawa sa mga flood control na 'yan (Someone asked, 'Can we be sure that the funds will be used properly?' I said, 'You don't understand how local government works. Local governments are not capable of doing what happened with those flood control projects)," the President stressed.
Marcos pointed out that the budget will not be abused because "if the work is not done well, people come to our houses."
"Kakatukin kayo, nung alas-dos, alas-tres ng umaga, bakit ang pangit ng ginawa ninyo? Bakit ganito? Bakit yung ganyan? Wala pa. Bakit yung pinangako ninyo? Wala pa (They will knock on your door at two or three o'clock in the morning and ask, 'Why did you do such a poor job? Why is it like this? Why is that still unfinished? What happened to what you promised)?" Marcos said.
"Kaya meron tayong, meron tayong nagbabantay (So we have people keeping watch)," he added.
The President further said that all constituents are monitoring them. Thus, he is confident that the program will be implemented properly and will deliver the benefits the national government intends to provide.
"Basta't idaan sa local government, ay palagay, alam ko na, alam na alam ko, na tiyak na mabilis na labas at tama ang pupuntahan (As long as the funds go through the local government, I know, I'm absolutely certain, that they will be released quickly and used for their intended purpose)," Marcos said.
The Marcos administration has launched a program allowing the national government to provide P200,000 fund to barangays nationwide. Half of the allocation goes to the barangay's programs, while the other half is used to help scholars selected by each barangay.
