Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago took up the cudgels for social media personality LANS on the issue of consent and artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images of a person's likeness.
"The use of AI to generate and circulate images of women without their consent is a disturbing reminder that technology can be weaponized to violate women's rights," Elago said on Monday, June 29.
"The recent incident involving content creator [LANS] should prompt a broader conversation on consent, accountability, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence," she noted.
LANS recently called out one Crist Briand for sharing an AI-generated photo of them together, as if they were a couple. LANS wrote in a Facebook post that she found the viral photo disrespectful.
Elago, a member of the Makabayan bloc, echoed LANS's sentiments.
(Whatever the intention of the content creator in making it, AI must not be used to manipulate a person’s image without their consent. Such an act is a violation of women’s rights.)
(Our laws must also keep pace with the rapid development of technology.)
In this regard, she bared that the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality had. already passed the proposed measure to strengthen the Safe Spaces Act, with Gabriela Party-list as principal author.
(This includes the use of AI and other emerging technologies in cases of gender-based online sexual harassment. We are closely monitoring its progress in the plenary for the second reading.)
(We stand with Lans and all women who fight against abuse in digital spaces. AI must not be used to erase the concept of consent.)
"Ang teknolohiya ay dapat magsulong ng paggalang sa dignidad at karapatan ng bawat tao, hindi maging kasangkapan sa pambabastos at karahasan laban sa kababaihan," she pointed out.
(Technology should promote respect for the dignity and rights of every person, not become a tool for harassment and violence against women.)
